From 21 June to 1 July 2025, H.E. Mrs. Piyapin Niyomrerks, Ambassador of Thailand to Kazakhstan, entrusted Dr. Orathai Phubunlap Gunaseelan, Counsellor of the Royal Thai Embassy in Astana, to lead a delegation of eight distinguished medical professors from the International Higher School of Medicine of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Avicenna Tajik State Medical University of the Republic of Tajikistan on a study visit to Thailand. The visit was conducted under the framework of the project titled “Promoting Thailand’s Development Diplomacy through Capacity Building in Health Security for Medical and Public Health Personnel of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Republic of Tajikistan,” with funding support from the Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand.

The project aimed to enhance Thailand’s leadership role in Development Diplomacy and as a regional and international Medical Hub, by facilitating knowledge exchange in the fields of medicine and public health between leading Thai institutions and Central Asian countries. During the visit, the delegation held fruitful discussions and explored collaboration opportunities with several premier Thai institutions, including Samitivej Hospital Group, BNH Hospital, Chulabhorn Royal Academy, the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, and the Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University. The delegation also visited key healthcare institutions in Khon Kaen province, such as Srinagarind Hospital, the Cholangiocarcinoma Research Institute, and ACRO, Khon Kaen University’s clinical research operations center. Additionally, the delegation observed primary healthcare practices at the Samran Health Promoting Hospital and the Samliem Primary Healthcare Unit, the latter of which is under the Faculty of Medicine of Khon Kaen University.

Furthermore, the delegation explored Thailand’s medical tourism model in Pattaya, where they studied how medical services are seamlessly integrated with wellness and leisure experiences. They also visited beaches and tourist attractions to gain insights into the travel preferences of Central Asian tourists, helping highlight Thailand’s strong potential as a preferred destination for health and wellness tourism for the Central Asian markets.
